Fabric dyeing with turmeric By Doreen Jachmann Under Homesteading 2 min read Eco dyeing is a fun and creative way to add unique color and pattern to your clothing and fabric. Turmeric is a great natural dye for eco dyeing, and is especially useful for adding a yellow-orange hue to your projects. Turmeric is an ancient spice that has been used for centuries for its medicinal and coloring properties. It is easy to find in most grocery stores, and you don’t need a lot of it to get the desired effect. To make a turmeric dye bath, you will need turmeric, water, and a mordant. A mordant is a substance that helps the dye bond to the fabric and ensures the color stays vibrant. To begin the eco dyeing process, you will need to steep the turmeric powder in boiling water for several minutes. Once the water has cooled, you can add the mordant and stir until it is completely dissolved. Then, submerge the fabric in the dye bath and let it soak for a few hours. The longer you let the fabric soak, the more vibrant the color will be. When the dyeing process is complete, rinse the fabric in cold water to wash away any excess dye that didn’t attach to the fabric. Turmeric and Magenta Plant as fabric dyes. 1. Put the pot on the stove and fill it with 3-4 cups of water. 3. Add 1/4 cup of turmeric powder to the water. 4. Bring the water to a boil and stir occasionally with the wooden spoon. 5. Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat and let the turmeric simmer for 15-20 minutes. 6. After the turmeric has simmered for 15-20 minutes, turn off the heat and allow the dye to cool. 7. Once the dye has cooled, strain the liquid into the empty container. 8. Put on the gloves and submerge the item of clothing into the dye. 9. Let the clothing sit in the dye for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. 10. After 30 minutes, remove the clothing and rinse it in cold water until the water runs clear. 11. Hang the clothing up to dry and enjoy your newly dyed item of clothing! Share Post Share Pin it
