Why we raise and process our own meat birds
Raising our own meat birds can be a rewarding and cost–effective way to provide our family with healthy, ethically–raised chicken meat. Although it can be more expensive than buying chicken at the supermarket, there are many benefits to raising our own birds that make it worth the extra cost.
The first advantage to raising our own meat birds is that we can be sure of the quality of the meat. When we raise our own birds, we can control their diet, housing, and access to natural sunlight, all of which can have a big impact on the nutritional quality of the meat.
We can also monitor the birds for any signs of illness and take the appropriate measures to keep them healthy. This means that the meat we get from our own birds is likely to be of a much higher quality than that found in the supermarket.
Another benefit of raising our own meat birds is that we can be sure of the ethical standards used to raise them. Many factory–farmed chickens are kept in cramped, dirty conditions with limited access to fresh air and sunlight, and are often fed an unnatural diet of grain–based feeds. When we raise our own birds, we can provide them with a more natural, humane environment, with plenty of fresh air
